Bike-O-Vision Cycling Journey- American Gems (WS #16) [Blu-ray]

Gorgeous Views, Much of It Ocean, As We Ride Through Stunning Parts of Our Country
These Bike-O-Vision DVDs are pleasant enough to entice an exerciser off that couch. The key is the locations they've chosen, which are excellent!

Yesterday evening I just didn't want to work out. I use a variety of cycling, walking, and hiking videos to inspire me, but I just didn't want a really tough workout. I looked through some of my new DVDs to see if one would just reach out and grab me.

'American Gems' includes some of my favorite parts of the country, spectacular areas around Monterey, Pebble Beach, and 17-Mile Drive in California, and that was enough for me to give it a try. There were other drives which included Nevada and Maine, for a unique variety of choices, all good.

Immediately my mood improved and I started enjoying the ride. These are gorgeous views. I was able to go as fast as I wanted to for my own workout purposes, which weren't too optimistic yesterday as I started. As I got into the workout I checked my heart rate monitor and...

Not enough woodsy scenery
I was expecting this to be a more woodsy or coastal environment and to my disappointment it was more city like. There are 5 environments to choose from and fortunately the last 2 are what I was looking for so I'll keep it. Maybe I can get used to the city views. Also the music is not quite biking music, it's almost hillbilly like and not very enjoyable to listen to. I'll probably use my MP3 player for these routes.

Gilles Deleuze from A to Z

Inimitable Deleuze
I purchased this DVD in France, watched it in French, and was so pleased to be able to share an English sub-titled version with friends. I am a real "groupie" of this unclassifiable French philosopher, and my husband and I made it a habit a couple of summers ago of watching one "letter" i.e. one theme every evening before dinner. Food for thought but no particular prior knowledge required to enjoy it. One worries only about the state of the perpetually smoking interviewer's lungs!

Landscape Photography: Creating Visual Eloquence

Landscape Photography
Manny Pontoriero's latest instructional DVD set includes two DVDs that offer outstanding instruction in landscape photography.

As with Manny's earlier instructional DVDs, don't just watch a DVD once. Instead, watch a DVD, take a ton of pictures, and then watch the DVD again. Digital photography allows you to take many photos of a scene, from every angle, using different lenses and filters, with an immediate review of your efforts, and without the need for development as with film photography.

The first DVD includes multiple sessions with Manny offering classroom style instruction that includes drawings and samples of a topic. Then, it is out into the field to use those principles in action. It is in the first DVD that Manny also explains Parallel Thinking. Parallel Thinking is `how else can I photograph this scene'? Don't just take the one picture that you initially saw. Instead, what other options (different times of the day, different seasons, using different...

EXCELLENT!!!
Manny is an excellent instructor. I've been tinkering with photography since high school. Now, 50 years later, it's time to put down my typewriter and pick up my camera. Thank you Manny for the informative tips and excellent instruction. Now I can go from taking snapshots to creating photographs.

Great Instructional DVD!!!!
I consider myself to be an amateur enthusiast photographer. This DVD set, like all of Manny's, are very informative. I enjoy his style of teaching and all the advice that he gives during the DVD. Landscape photography is one of my favorite styles to shoot. Once again Manny's many examples and differing locations made this DVD extremely educational. I have purchased all of Manny's Get the Picture DVDs and would highly recommend them. Thanks Manny!!!

Lensometry - Essential Skills and Procedures (Optician)

Excellent, what I've been waiting for!
I have been an optical manager for 10 years and the one of the most frustrating parts has been teaching lensometry beyond just the basics. I have tried several on-line lensometry videos, but have always been disappointing with their scope of training and video quality. I was hesitant to actually pay for a training video thinking I would be disappointed again. But I can tell you this video is well worth the money and has become part of standard training for all of my opticians.

Benefits:
1. The description speaks of "picture-in-picture" technology, but it has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Other videos I have tried may have shown what was seen in the eyepiece, but didn't show the actions of the hand dials at the same time as this video does. From a learning perspective, seeing both the drum movements and view through the eyepiece at the same time is incredibly beneficial.

2. Excellent scope of training. The few lensometry training videos I have found...

3D Creature Development Master Class

Alex Alvarez is a true master of his craft
This 8 dvd set is worth every penny. Not only does the instructor give hours of in depth lessons in creature design and animation but provides all the hd project files AND a book. Not to mention the box it comes in is pretty awesome looking! For so much material $350 is a real bargain! If you think about it it's $43 per disc AND a free set of prints and a book and a snazzy case! Most classes cost over a thousand so to say this is a bargain is an understatement.

SWISH 3 -- The Swish Free Throw

Wow, I am impressed
I have spent years using the swish method to teach shooting and have always been very impressed with the results that my players have had. At some of the clinics, I have watched players go from being inside shooters to outside shooters in one day. I taught Tom's old method to a tournament team that I put together two years ago and three of the eight boys increased their shooting percentage by over 25%. We beat the all star team from my association that had 10 of the best kids, 100% due to us being able to feed the ball outside and make the shot. One of the boys that did not pick it up right away is on my team this year. I have not seen him since the state tournament two years ago. He was shooting using Swish form with a great shot, over and over on the first day of practice. Even without me or anyone else to guide him to continue what he learned two years ago, he kept using and is working.

My own kids now have the best free throw percentages on their teams each...

This Video Will Give You An Extra Player On The Court!
When I was in 7th grade, I remember missing a foul shot in my intramural game that would have won the game. We ended up losing. If I only had Tom Nordlands's
"Swish 3" video, things may have been different. I have followed Tom Nordland's theories and practice techniques for the last ten years. His "cult" following has seen incredible results. In "Swish 3", Tom not only simplifies the fine art of shooting foul shots but gives facts backing up all his shooting theories. He uses terms like "dipping & inertia" and "relaxed hand & flop" which may not sound like anything special but are really the key to increasing your free throw percentage from the low 70's to the high 80's. This is a must-have video for anyone involved in basketball. So many games come down to the foul line that we need any advantage we can get. The "Swish 3" video is like having a 6th player on the court. This is very highly recommended!

St. Louis Cardinals: 2011 World Series Collectors Edition

One of Most Exciting World Series in Years
I understand all the complaints. I believe I am the first to review the actual DVDs. By the fifth inning of the first game, I forgot my issues with picture quality and started to enjoy the games. By most any measure, Game 6 is one of greatest games in World Series history. And that's the way it comes across here, with all the post-game interviews and comments included. In my case, some of the post-game stuff is new because my local station cut in with the "11 o'clock news." But, all the games are interesting...seven game World Series with two evenly-matched teams are very rare these days.

I am disappointed with the Bonus DVD, which is a recap of the two playoff series, and a small portion of the Cardinals victory parade. Why bother, if that's all you show?

For Cardinal fans (like me) who are upset about Albert Pujols leaving for the Angels, it was chance to watch Albert for one last time. I am angry about Pujols leaving, but again the World Series is so...

Additional audio tracks are a great feature
This complete collection of every minute of play from every game of the 2011 World Series -- one of the most exciting in decades -- is an essential addition the the collection of any baseball fan. From Albert Pujols' historic barrage in Game Three to the remarkably dramatic Game Six comeback(s) to the final out of Game Seven, it is all here in crystal clear video. Even if you are not a Cardinals fan (but especially if you are!) this is just the thing to get you through the long winter before the start of spring training.

I last purchased one of these collectors boxes back in 2006 (connect the dots ...). A new feature since then which is worth mentioning is that you can now choose from a total of four audio tracks: the FOX television broadcast (Joe Buck, Tim McCarver), the Spanish language telecast, and local radio broadcasts from St Louis and Texas. This is a real treat for fans like me who listen to a lot of games on the radio and enjoy listening to the home town...

The Greatest Game of All Time
This box set is INCREDIBLE! All the Fox broadcasts with alternate audio (that doesn't always line up perfect). Each DVD has its own case that has statistics and the inning by inning breakdown in the liner notes. The games all look great. Game 6 is INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Watching the last 5 innings of that game will give ANY baseball fan goosebumps. This was the best World Series of my lifetime. The DVD's are great and the packaging and presentation is fantastic. WATCH GAME 6, AMAZING!!!

The Modern Day Mountain Man, Season 5 :A 2-disc set of Alaska hunting adventures for brown bear, grizzly bear, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep

Modern day Mountain Man
Season 5 "Modern Day Mountain Man" is the latest addition to Billy Molls self produced guiding Alaskan Big Game DVD's. The quality of his filming in often difficult conditions, some how each video just gets better. This DVD has breathtaking scenery, it makes you feel a part of every hunt and he captures the intensity before and the excitement after the shot. He shares his passion with every Hunter. The scenes flying in a Super Cub along the Alaska Peninsular and through the Brooks Range offer a different view most of us will never experience. Billy's tips on skinning your animal, meat preparation, his suggestions on hunting gear add that extra interest. I looked for DVDs before I hunted Alaska, and Billy Molls produced the best ones I found by far. Now that I have hunted Alaska, I appreciate his videos even more. It looks like he has 2 cameramen, but I emailed him and he said he films it all himself!!! The video is actually 2 DVDs, and close to 5 hours long, not the 60-70 mins. of...

Dams of 2011

Not worth the Money
I was excited when purchasing this DVD but after the first 5 minutes. It is the most boring DVD I have ever purchased. There is no narration or informative text, just alot of footage, panning of water pouring through the Dam Gates. I've seen better home made youtube videos on the Dams that tell more in 15 minutes than what his video does in two extremely boring hours.....

awesome
This documentary is outstanding. As somebody from a town where one of the 6 dams is located it really puts in to perspective how horrific things actually were for others. It shows the six dams with record amounts of water gushing through them, very interesting, worth the price for sure. highly recommendDams of 2011

I loved the video! Great way to learn in the comfort of your own home. I had fun sharing this with my family and friends. We could all use the instruction even though some thought they already knew it all! Great Job! Thanks!

We are learning!
My wife and I bought a country swing dance instructional video before this one that was hard to follow. These guys do a good job of really breaking down the moves and showing how to do it right.

Awesome!
My girlfriend gave me this video along with Volume 2 for Christmas. Her and I have always been into swing dancing and this gift was perfect for us! I absolutely love this video! It helps me with the technical side to swing dancing. I am not a very skilled dancer and haven't been blessed with the ability to keep a great rhythm but this video helped me a lot! Great instructions and easy to learn and follow! 5 Stars!

Yoga: Mind Body Connection

The real deal. Excellent for beginner-intermediate. This DVD series is misunderstood
Very pleased with this video watched on Amazon Prime. Have been using a number of other techniques to learn yoga poses (books, youtube, classes), their names, their uses, and those little extra tricks that make any particular position effective. This video contains the difference between just imitating yoga poses and actually being in the correct position having gotten there in the correct way along with understanding why and the health benefits of each pose. Each and every pose is demonstrated and thoroughly explained both in terms of getting into the position and benefits. The speaker has a British-indian accent and is easy to understand.

Some of the poses are simple and some are not. But this video contains the primary basic poses and excellent instructions, excellent video demonstration along with a thorough description of the use of the poses. I learned quite a bit and have been studying yoga for a couple years, but also wish I'd started with this video ... I'd be so...

A Compendium of Asanas
This is a guide, just as described to asanas presented first with a drawing and the name of the pose, next actual model in the pose, then a demonstration of the asana with voice over instructions, followed by an explanation of benefits plus cautions. I used it for a practice but it is not really designed with a flow of moves for a practice in mind. This video is an illustrated dictionary of poses, very informative, somewhat instructional. The music is appropriate.

This video does a great job of explaining it and how it works. It takes years to begin to understand and see for your self how it effects us all, by learning you have a greater understanding for those around you and why they are the way they are. What you can do differently to help others in many ways. I love astrology and I am thankful to have integrated it into my life for it has helped me in many ways.

Mixing, Gain Structure & Phase Reversal

Who was this supposed to benifit?
I'll give this video credit for production value. It's a modern, polished presentation. However, I can't think of anyone that would benefit from this video. It's too fast paced for the novice to really learn what is going on. In the presentation on phase reversal, for example, it demonstrates phase reversal but really does not illustrate what is going on or why it is relevant. It assumes the viewer's understanding of too much jargon to be for it to be appropriate for a novice. However, it's too thin on content for an experienced person to expand their understanding. The host's zany mannerisms undermine his credibility as an expert.

Exploring Mahler's Resurrection Symphony

An essential addition to any collection of Mahler's works.
This superb film offers an in depth study of Mahler's 2nd Symphony from its conception to its completion. The involvement of a generous number of outstanding musicians and scholars (musicologists, philosophers, theologians) and the narration by Thomas Hampson beyond doubt recommend this DVD. The re-enactments of incidents in Mahler's life are carefully done, and the cinematography is stunningly beautiful. As a fan and student of the works of Mahler for over fifty years, I recommend this film and the performance video with great enthusiasm and without reservation. The High Definition quality of the film could not be bettered and the recorded sound is beyond reproach.

This 2 DVD set includes the complete performance of the symphony in New York City's Riverside Church by an orchestra of musicians especially brought together from the New York Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and assembled chorus from the NYC area...

Jason Starr's Latest Mahler Film
Following up the success of his brilliant film about Mahler's Third Symphony, What The Universe Tells Me, Jason Starr has produced and directed an insightful and inspiring motion picture, entitled Of Love, Death and Beyond , in which he explores the depths and heights of Mahler's Second Symphony. Narrated by possibly the finest Mahler singer of our time, Thomas Hampson, the film presents a virtual cavalcade of celebrated Mahler scholars and performers who enlighten us with their in-depth comments about this towering masterpiece, performed here by members of several major orchestras under the direction of Maestro Neeme Järvi. Ingeniously conceived visual effects reinforce the deep emotions stirred by the music and provide extraordinarily evocative imagery that enhances the compelling commentary. I recommend it for all lovers of Mahler's music, whether they have vast experience in listen to it or have never heard a note of it. We look forward with anxious anticipation to Starr's...

Beautiful and enlightening: 5 stars plus!
I enthusiasticaly agree with the other reviewers in giving this 2-DVD set five stars plus! Disc one contains an insightful, penetrating, and detailed musical/philosophical/psychological analysis that is deftly and seamlessly illustrated with both musical selections from the symphony and great visual art among other images. Among those speaking are Mahler scholars Henry-Louis de la Grange, Donald Mitchell, and Stephen Hefling and others; theologians; and the noted philosopher Martha Nussbaum from the University of Chicago. Baritone Thomas Hampson, one of the foremost interpreters of Mahler's songs, provides narration. A second DVD contains the entire symphony performed at Riverside Church in New York City with thoughtful direction and sharply defined editing; a bargain for the additional $10 over the single disc product of just disc 1 Of Love Death, and Beyond, Exploring Mahler's Resurrection Symphony. Awesome anime!
I just got my copy of Season 1 and 2 and this is the best anime I've seen so far! I haven't read the mangas yet, but, I'll be looking foward to it! Can't wait for a Capu3!!!

Enjoyable Supernatural Anime With The Usual Touch Of Fan Service
If you've seen the series online or checked the manga out then the series story and what it has shouldn't be that much of a shocker, the main characters are entertaining enough though I kind of wish that Tsukune was a little less wimpy then he was on the anime series. The series does give us the standard harem genre with about five girls all who throughout the first season are introduced to us and later grow feelings for young Tsukune. The story of the series itself is basically you have a young highschool boy Tsukune Aono who after failing the entrance exam to a couple of highschools is invited to go to Yokai academy, which Tsukune is first ecstatic about until he realizes that the academy is actually a school for yokai or demons and monsters and starts to reevaluate his choice on staying at the school. The one plus for him is a young attractive girl named Moka Akashiya who he's attracted to but is also a powerful S Class vampire but due to a rosary seal placed on her Moka's...

Good and could be better

Richard Strauss: Capriccio [Blu-ray]

Unsurpassed Production of Strauss's Last Opera
Capriccio represents the culmination of Strauss's operatic career, just as Metamorphosen and the Four Last Songs are the capstones of his orchestral and vocal writing. Capriccio was premiered in 1942 in Munich, whose beloved opera house was destroyed by Allied bombing the following year. The Nazi regime, too, soon fell, but Strauss's opera--focusing on eternal questions of love and art--has become increasingly popular and is widely considered one of his greatest works.

In the notes for this recording, George Hall writes, "Despite the extreme circumstances surrounding its creation--catastrophic for the wider world, imbued with fear and shame for Strauss himself, whose chief concern during these years was to protect his beloved Jewish daughter-in-law and grandsons--Capriccio is far more than the piece of elegant escapism Strauss's detractors have claimed it to be." In Capriccio, he continues, Strauss "reasserted his commitment to the values of art as a civilised and...

Enrapturing and lovely
The DVD isn't out yet, but I just wanted to put in a word about how lovely and enrapturing this performance is. I saw the live broadcast in a Minneapolis theater and I was simply blown away by every aspect of it. Renee Fleming will capture your heart with her gorgeous singing and her portrayal of a woman who has to choose between two lovers. (The one slight false note, IMO, is her contemporary hair styling; doesn't look right for the period. But I can live with that.) The rivals for her heart are finely drawn and sung--the musician passionate and headlong; the poet buttoned-up and nervous, but desperate for the Countess's love. The supporting singers are right on target--characterful and funny. The Met sets and costumes are excellent. And Andrew Davis does a solid job in the pit. This was Strauss's last opera--and what a tuneful, touching human story to tell right at the end of his incredible career.

A Worthy Contender, but..............
For an opera that makes little or no concession to being part of the regular repertoire Capriccio is now available in three different productions and Fleming is repeatting the role she previously taped in France. This is fortunate since her first dvd displays an utterly self absorbed performance that is truly unfortunate. The entire production had unfortuate aspects that were gratuituous, e.g., Nazi elements simply because the work was composed during WWWII. During the interim Fleming did a Countess for Vienna State Opera which was telecast; it was reported to be superb. Alas we will probably never get to see it.

I have no objection to time traveling if it adds something to the mix--or doesn't get in the way of performaing the opera. Here it is all very chic and stylish but it does seem at odds with the text at many points. With references to Gluck and other 18th Century composers who are essentially "names" in that they are only going to be found in reference books what...

The Eagle's Children (Library/ High School/ Non Profit)

A must for any danzante!
Being new (3 years) to the life of Danza Azteca, this film is a beautiful testament of the birth of danza in our country!

Excellent documentary on modern traditional aztec dance.
For anyone interested in the fundamentals of Danza Azteca, Eagle's Children portrays the elemental facets of this age-old tradition. La Danza is a fusion of ancient indigenous Mexican culture and the Catholic church which functions as a catalyst for the survival of the tradition. This idea is well manifested in the images and dialogue captured in The Eagles Children.

Yoga for Digestive Problems

ringing bell is its demise.
This video uses only visual, non-verbal instruction. Before each exercise is performed, a screen shot of a stick figure in the Asana (pose) along with the technical name of the Asana is shown, which I suppose makes up for the lack of verbal directions. The Asana's shown are all very basic.

I was only able to get about 8 minutes into this before I had to turn it off; the major problem for me being the tingy doorbell like noise that would play at both the beginning and end of a pose presumably as a cue to tell you to move on to the next Asana. Had this noise been the sound of an actual chime, or bell, or flute it would be fine, but it wasn't, so it might as well been nails on a chalk board ringing every 30-60 seconds.

If you can get past this particular noise (or watch it on mute as sound isn't really necessary), this could be very good for someone just starting out with a yoga practice,or someone who prefers a gentle style of yoga.

I guess I will have...

Great meditative yoga for your belly
I thought this was a great, meditative yoga video. I don't particularly like the non-stop talking of many yoga videos. The chime at the beginning and end of each pose allows you to close your eyes and focus on your breathing and the pose and to meditate, rather than on the TV. Each pose is held for at least a minute or two, so that you can really get the meditation and stretch. However, since there is no verbal instructions, it helps if you have prior yoga experience to watch this video.

Eden of the East: Complete Series (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Juiz says that this is worth your time
Takizawa Akira, early 20s, stands in front of the White House, gun in hand, stark naked and a mysterious phone with the word Selecao imprinted on it. Memory gone, Akira regains his consciousness after, seemingly, erasing his own memories just a few seconds back. Why is he there? What reason would he have to brandish a gun in front of such a place? Why's his memory gone?

What's happening?

With all these important questions that should take precedent over anything else, his strange predicament takes a bow so that he can rescue a girl in front of him with a predicament of her own. That girl, Saki Morimi, for entirely different reasons, stands in front of the White House and creates a situation, drawing the attention of the police.

And with a simple step forward Akira goes to aid Saki, and a special relationship develops that gives meaning to this whole series. This bond between them is what drives us, the viewer, to keep watching amidst all the...

Blu-ray: Definitely the top contender of best anime series on Blu-ray of 2010!
In April 2009, a few of Japan's popular talents in the anime and manga industry teamed up on a project known as "Higashi no Eden" (Eden of the East).

Featuring anime production from Production I.G., "Eden of the East" would feature the work of series creator Kenji Kamiyama (creator of "Blood: The Last Vampire" and worked on "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex", "Hakkenden" and "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade"), manga artist/writer Chica Umino ("Honey and Clover"), art director Yusuke Takeda ("Mobile Suit Gundam Wing", "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex", "Neon Genesis Evangelion") and legendary anime musician Kenji Kawai ("Ghost in the Shell", "Maison Ikkoku", "Patlabor", "Ranma 1/2', "Vampire Princess Miyu").

The anime series debuted on Fuji TV in April 2009 and was followed by three films and now the complete series has been released on Blu-ray (and three films will follow) courtesy of FUNimation Entertainment.

One of the best anime series in recent years ~
So the series begins with a naked guy standing in front of the White House with a cell phone and a gun. He has no memory of how he got there. Go --->

This is not your usual, action packed anime series. Along with Code Geass, this was a delightful breath of fresh air into the US anime market. The series is more cerebral and will appeal to fans of Ghost in the Shell, L.A.I.N., and other intelligent and less action packed shows and series (yeah GITS has action, but also has that futuristic cyber punk element). I wouldn't sum this up as a cyper punk or sci-fi series. More of a modern 'advanced science' story.

The entire series revolves around a conspiratorial game played by several individuals. These individuals are given a finite amount of money and allowed to spend it however they wish. Though when they run out, they are terminated. But the winner is apparently the person who puts the money to the best use while not being terminated. One of the players is...

Heaven's Lost Property: Complete First Season (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

crass, lowbrow, ecchi - but very funny
If you are down on lowbrow anime pervert humor / ecchi comdey, regardless if there is some real cleverness & humor in it, then just walk away. This being another fantasy ecchi harem comedy, it has all of that & then some.

But this show really had me laughing. And there is an intersting mystery going on with some darker ominous undertones, creating some legitimate tension making you want to see the next episode. The angeloid characters are all well done characters with distinct different personalities & motivations. Our mian protaganist who ends up having to look after the angeloids, is an idiot. But one of the better idiots I have seen in these kinds of comedys, and well done character. It could be easy to dismiss a show like this as more fan service cheeasiness, but I think it does have some genuinely funny stuff going on throughout most of the show. The end credit animation & songs being different for each episode (and quite funny & clever) add a nice touch.

Heaven's Lost Property, Season 1
I really liked this show. The humor is very lowbrow and some of the plots get really dirty. It is not something a person would want to just tune into to fill a day without looking into first. That said, it is really funny and definitely worth watching.

On some levels, this show has a linear plot line that can progress from episode to episode. It deals with an angel and the boy she belongs to and her ability to give him anything he wants. Did I mention he is really, really, obsessed with females and their undergarments? Well, that comes up a lot, as does his connection to his childhood friend/neighbor/possible love interest. There are two other characters as well, the class president and the boy who wants to fly, and another angel evening out a cast that adds a lot to the humor.

Here's an example of a plot line, to see if it is something you would watch, noting this is done with humor but that it also involves some nudity and crass comments/suggestions. Having...
